(Class 5 – Our World)
Here are the answers based on the Class 5 EVS lesson “Chapter 6. Every drop is Precious” (Class 5 – Our World) APSCERT, ANDHRA PRADESH
I. Conceptual Understanding
1. What are the uses of rivers?
Rivers are very useful to us. They are used for:
- Drinking water
- Irrigation for agriculture
- Generating hydroelectric power
- Water transport
- Fishing (livelihood for fishermen)
- Tourism and recreation
- Supporting aquatic life
2. What are the tributaries of river Krishna?
The tributaries of river Krishna are:
- Bhima
- Gayatri
- Ghataprabha
- Koyna
- Malaprabha
- Munneru
- Nira
- Palem
- Panchaganga
- Tungabhadra
- Vemana
- Wyra
3. Write a brief note on water pollution.
Water pollution is caused by human activities.
Effluents from industries, dairy farms, agricultural wastes, and wastes from thermal power stations are drained into rivers. Because of this:
- River water becomes unsafe for drinking.
- Aquatic life is damaged.
- People suffer from water-borne diseases.
Long ago, people used to drink river water directly. But now it is polluted and not fit for drinking.
II. Questioning and Hypothesis
4. What are the reasons for drying up of rivers?
Rivers dry up due to:
- Very little or no rainfall
- Delay in monsoon
- Drought conditions
- Overuse of water
- Human activities and pollution
When rainfall is scarce, it leads to drought and rivers start drying up.
III. Experiments and Field Observations
5. Collect samples of water from different water resources and discuss which water is suitable for drinking.
Water collected from:
- Rivers (polluted in many areas)
- Ponds
- Wells
- Borewells
- Tap water
Water that is clean, filtered, and free from contamination is suitable for drinking. Generally:
- Filtered and boiled tap water
- Properly treated well/borewell water
are safe for drinking.
IV. Information Skills and Project Work
6. Collect information from people on how droughts or floods have affected their life.
Floods:
- Damage houses and property
- Wash away cattle
- Cause water-borne diseases
- Force people to stay in relief camps
Droughts:
- Make agricultural lands non-cultivable
- Cause migration for livelihood
- Lead to water scarcity
V. Drawing and Model Making
7. Make a poster on how to “Save Water”.
Poster ideas:
- “Save Water, Save Life”
- “Every Drop is Precious”
- “Don’t Waste Water”
- “Turn Off the Tap”
- “Use Water Wisely”

VI. Appreciation
8. Write slogans on controlling the pollution of rivers.
- “Keep Rivers Clean, Keep Life Green.”
- “Stop Water Pollution.”
- “Save Rivers, Save Future.”
- “Don’t Throw Waste into Rivers.”
- “Clean Water is Everyone’s Right.”
