Punctuation for Kids: No. 1 English Grammar Solutions

Punctuation marks

Punctuation marks are special symbols we use in writing to make our meaning clear. They help readers know when to pause, stop, ask a question, show excitement, or understand who is speaking.

Without punctuation, a sentence can be confusing.

Example:

  • Let’s eat Grandma.
  • Let’s eat, Grandma.

The first sentence sounds like we are going to eat Grandma! The second sentence means we are inviting Grandma to eat with us. A small comma changes the whole meaning.

Learning punctuation helps children read better, write clearly, and communicate their ideas correctly.

What Are Punctuation Marks?

Punctuation marks are symbols used in sentences. Some common punctuation marks are:

Punctuation markNameMain useExample
.Full stop / PeriodEnds a statementI like mangoes.
,CommaShows a short pause or separates itemsI bought apples, bananas, and grapes.
?Question markEnds a questionWhere is your bag?

:ColonIntroduces a listBring these things: a pencil, eraser, and ruler.
;SemicolonJoins closely related sentencesIt was raining; we stayed inside.
-HyphenJoins wordsThis is a well-known story.

For primary-school writing, the most important punctuation marks are the full stop, comma, question mark, exclamation mark, apostrophe, and quotation marks.

1. Full Stop (.)

A full stop is used at the end of a telling sentence or statement.

A statement gives information, tells something, or describes something.

Examples:

  • My name is Anu.
  • The sun rises in the east.
  • We play cricket after school.
  • My father reads the newspaper.
  • The cat is sleeping on the mat.

Do not use a full stop after a question or an exclamation.

  • Where are you going?
  • Hurray! We won the match!

Exercise A: Add full stops

Write the full stop in the correct place.

  1. My school has a big playground
  2. Birds build nests in trees
  3. I drink milk every morning
  4. Ravi has a new bicycle
  5. We celebrate Independence Day in August

Answers

  1. My school has a big playground.
  2. Birds build nests in trees.
  3. I drink milk every morning.
  4. Ravi has a new bicycle.
  5. We celebrate Independence Day in August.

2. Comma (,)

A comma shows a short pause in a sentence. It is often used to separate items in a list.

Examples:

  • I have a pencil, a pen, an eraser, and a ruler.
  • We saw lions, tigers, monkeys, and deer at the zoo.
  • My favourite colours are red, blue, green, and yellow.
  • For breakfast, I ate idli, sambar, and chutney.

A comma can also be used when we call or speak directly to someone.

Examples:

  • Mother, may I go outside?
  • Rahul, please close the door.
  • Good morning, teacher.

Exercise B: Add commas

Put commas in the correct places.

  1. I packed books pencils crayons and a lunch box.
  2. We need rice vegetables oil and salt.
  3. Sita please help me.
  4. My friends are Asha Balu Charan and Deepa.
  5. Grandmother tell us a story.

  2. We need rice, vegetables, oil, and salt.
  3. Sita, please help me.
  4. My friends are Asha, Balu, Charan, and Deepa.
  5. Grandmother, tell us a story.

3. Question Mark (?)

A question mark is used at the end of a question.

A question asks for information.

Examples:

  • What is your name?
  • Where do you live?
  • How old are you?
  • Can you swim?
  • Why are you late?
  • Did you finish your homework?

Question words often include:

  • What
  • Where
  • When
  • Why
  • Who
  • Which
  • How

Exercise C: Add question marks

Add a question mark where needed.

  1. What is your favourite fruit

Answers

  2. Where is my water bottle?
  3. Do you like to draw pictures?

  2. What is inside the box _

4. Exclamation Mark (!)

An exclamation mark shows strong feelings such as happiness, surprise, excitement, fear, pain, or anger.

Examples:

  • Hurray! We won the game!
  • Wow! That painting is beautiful!
  • Oh no! I dropped my ice cream!
  • Be careful! The road is wet!
  • What a huge elephant!
  • Help! There is a fire!

Use exclamation marks carefully. Too many exclamation marks can make writing difficult to read.

Exercise E: Add exclamation marks

Put an exclamation mark in the correct place.

  1. Hurray we are going on a picnic
  2. Wow this cake is delicious
  3. Oh no I forgot my notebook
  4. What a beautiful butterfly

  2. Wow! This cake is delicious!
  3. Oh no! I forgot my notebook!
  4. What a beautiful butterfly!
  5. Stop! The ball is coming!

5. Apostrophe (’)

An apostrophe is a small mark used in two important ways:

  1. To show that something belongs to someone.
  2. To make shortened forms of words.

Showing ownership

When something belongs to one person, add an apostrophe and s.

Examples:

  • Raju’s pencil = the pencil belongs to Raju.
  • Mother’s sari = the sari belongs to Mother.
  • The girl’s doll = the doll belongs to the girl.
  • The teacher’s table = the table belongs to the teacher.

When something belongs to more than one person and the word already ends in s, place the apostrophe after the s.

Examples:

  • The boys’ bags = bags belonging to many boys.
  • The girls’ classroom = classroom belonging to many girls.

Shortened forms

An apostrophe can show that letters have been left out.

Full formShort form
I amI’m
Do notDon’t
CannotCan’t
Is notIsn’t
We areWe’re
You areYou’re
They areThey’re
It isIt’s

Examples:

  • I’m ready for school.
  • Don’t run in the classroom.
  • It’s a sunny day.

  3. I can’t find my shoes.
  4. We’re going to visit our cousins.
  5. The teacher’s chair is near the board.

6. Quotation Marks (“ ”)

Quotation marks are used to show the exact words spoken by a person.

They are also called speech marks or inverted commas.

Examples:

  • Mother said, “Wash your hands before dinner.”
  • “May I borrow your pencil?” asked Kiran.
  • The teacher said, “Open your English book.”
  • “I am hungry,” said the child.
  • Father said, “We will visit the beach tomorrow.”

Notice that the spoken words are placed inside quotation marks.

Exercise G: Add quotation marks

Rewrite these sentences using quotation marks.

  3. The teacher said Keep your classroom clean.
  4. Grandfather said Honesty is the best policy.

  3. The teacher said, “Keep your classroom clean.”
  4. Grandfather said, “Honesty is the best policy.”
  5. Anu asked, “Can I play outside?”

7. Colon (:)

A colon is used before a list of items.

Examples:

  • Bring these items: a pencil, an eraser, and a ruler.
  • My favourite fruits are: mangoes, grapes, apples, and bananas.
  • We saw these animals at the zoo: lions, elephants, zebras, and monkeys.

  • Use a comma for a short pause or to separate items in a list.
  • Use a question mark at the end of a question.
  • Use an exclamation mark to show strong feelings.
