Stone Soup

stone soup

One cold autumn evening, two tired travelers arrived at a small village after walking for miles. Their clothes were dusty, their feet ached, and they were starving. Hoping for a warm meal and maybe a place to rest, they knocked on the door of the first cottage.

But the villagers were suspicious of strangers. Even though many of them had food stored away, no one wanted to share. One person claimed their harvest had been poor. Another said they barely had enough for themselves. Door after door closed in the travelers’ faces.

After trying several homes with no luck, the two men stepped back into the middle of the village and exchanged a quick smile. One of them suddenly spoke in a loud, cheerful voice.

“Well then,” he said, “I suppose we’ll just have to make our famous stone soup!”

The villagers, who had been secretly watching from their windows, became curious right away.

“Stone soup?” one woman asked, stepping outside. “Is that really possible?”

“Oh, absolutely,” the traveler replied confidently. “It’s actually quite simple. We just need a big pot.”

Curiosity quickly began to replace suspicion. Someone brought out a large iron pot. Another villager fetched water from the well, and soon the pot was set over a fire in the village square.

The travelers carefully dropped a few smooth stones into the water.

“These are very special stones,” one traveler explained with a straight face as he stirred the pot. “They make excellent soup. Of course, adding just a tiny thing or two can make the flavor even better. Maybe a little salt?”

A villager shrugged and brought some salt from home.

“Perfect,” said the traveler. “You know, a couple of carrots would make this even more delicious.”

A farmer remembered he had plenty of carrots stored away and went to fetch a few. Soon after, someone else added potatoes. Another person brought onions. Before long, a woman contributed herbs, and someone even offered a small piece of salted meat.

Little by little, each villager added something to the pot. No one felt like they were giving too much because everyone else was sharing too.

As the soup simmered, a rich, mouthwatering smell filled the air. The villagers gathered around the fire, talking and laughing while the travelers stirred the bubbling pot.

Finally, the soup was ready.

Bowls were brought out, and the travelers served generous portions to everyone. The villagers sat together and enjoyed the warm, hearty meal. To their surprise, it was one of the best soups they had ever tasted — and there was more than enough for all.

The villagers looked at the travelers in amazement.

“So the stones really worked?” someone asked.

The travelers smiled.

“The stones helped,” one of them said, “but the real magic came from everyone sharing what they had.”

From that day on, the villagers never forgot the lesson they had learned. When everyone contributes even a small amount, together they can create something far greater than any one person could alone.

Moral of the story: When people share and work together, even small contributions can create abundance for everyone.
